If you want to get the OEM look without spending a small fortune, you can try and snag the OEM setup from a salvage yard off another 7th gen Corolla. Basic parts are the steering wheel switch, vehicle speed sensor adapter, cruise control ECU (brain), and cruise control servo/module (black box that runs to throttle body). The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Corolla. The contact was driving with the cruise control set to approximately 70 mph. When the brakes were applied to disable the cruise control, the vehicle would not respond and instead, accelerated abnormally. The brake pedal fell into the floorboard and the contact applied the emergency parking brake but the vehicle still would not respond and the contact crashed into the rear of a vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer had an engineer inspect the vehicle who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 66,771.

Failure Date: 06/30/2010

Cruise control can be activated at typical road/highway speeds even when car is in neutral (on a manual transmission). As a result, the accelerator is electronically depressed, causing the engine to rev and hit the rev limiter. There are multiple ways to deactivate the cruise control, but the stress could be damaging on the engine and the scenario could a major distraction to the driver.

Cruise control doesn't work. I had it repaired at the dealership and about a month later it went out again. When I called back, they said they would repair it, but it would not be free of charge. Seemed like the repair should have lasted if it truly was fixed. Haven't had cruise since and it was so nice for long distance travel.

My husband was driving my 2004 Corolla-s. He had the cruise control set for 75 mph. I looked down at the speedometer because it seemed he was speeding up and noticed the speed at 90 mph. He couldn't take it off cruise control so he hit the brakes and a shortly after the cruise control light came off. We did start slowing down when he used the brakes.

My 2004 Corolla le is the first vehicle I have owned that has cruise control. When I am driving at highway speeds and engage the cruise control, it holds a steady speed. When the vehicle encounters an incline, such as a bridge or a hill, it will downshift and continue to accelerate well beyond the speed set. Every instance that this has happened I have been able to simply disengage the cruise control within 5 to 10 mph above the set speed, but it seems as though the vehicle would continue to accelerate as long as it was on the incline. Thinking this is how cruise control worked, not having used it before, I never took it to a dealer and simply turn it off when encountering an incline. . In light of the recent Toyota acceleration issues, I thought this information would be useful to NHTSA.

Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Corolla 1
Toyota corolla with manual transmission

When cruise control engaged, if it hits a level or down hill it appears to down shift, but continue to speed up. It should just reduce the fuel to slow down. This appears to be a program problem. This happens at all speeds. It was bought used from a Toyota dealer. I have not asked the service department yet.

Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Toyota Corolla 2

Even on small hills if the cruise control is engaged, the motor will race to 4000 rpms while the car will try to maintain set speed (often goes 3-4 mph higher). As the road levels, the motor will drop down to normal rpm's. I asked the tech at Toyota and was told her husband's Corolla does this too. Acted like it is nornal.

Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Corolla 3

The 2018 Toyota Corolla cruise control is dangerous. When cruise control is on, going down a slight hill, the transmission downshifts but throttle does not reduce causing car to increase speed 10-15 mph with high rpms. At bottom of incline transmission goes to higher gear and brakes are applied very hard causing vehicle to suddenly and violently slowdown 15-20 mph. In this situation if cruise control is not disengaged the car will go well over the speed limit and to an unsafe speed for the roadway. The braking action is so sudden and violent it's difficult to control the vehicle and has several times in a couple of months caused me to very nearly get rear ended by a vehicle behind me which was not originally following too close. As the dangerous cruise control starts its increase in speed the vehicles behind may increase their speed and as they are increasing speed my car cruise control system jams on the brakes and cause the following car to come dangerously close to collision. As well the other driver has on at least one occasions became angry started road raging thinking I had purposely brake checked. The 2018 Toyota Corolla cruise control is dangerous, could certainly be deadly based on my experience and further is virtually unusable as a purchased feature on anything but a flat road. I've driven over 20 cars in my life and am very experienced with cruise controls in 6 different manufacturers cars. The cruise control on my 2018 Toyota Corolla could cause injury, lawsuit, road rage with personal injury or death. I've already had it to the dealer twice and am taking it back this week.

Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Corolla 4

While driving down a downgrade with the cruise control engaged and set to 65mph, the cvt transmission downshifts, the rpms increased and the vehicle accelerated to well over the speed limit. It felt like I was losing control. I had to activate the brakes to disengage the cruise control in order to reduce my speed to below the posted speed limit. I tried it again on another downgrade and the same situation was duplicated. The car will also engage rpms when you are downgrading or upgrading in cruise control I did not take the car into a dealer since the issue has been reported to dealerships with a solution to this problem.

Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Corolla 5

They asked me to come to Toyota of dallas to fill out an 'unintended acceleration' ua report (see below). The technician became very angry about this issue and told me that the manufacturer created the car this way. Under almost any circumstance, (going around a sharp curve, heavy traffic, any downhill or uphill, weather conditions, or fog) when using the cruise control the car will try to slow it self down from set speed at 65 mph, by dropping into a lower gear, ramping up the rpm's to 5000 forcing the vehicle to accelerate 10 to 15 miles over the set speed which was set at 65 mph. In this case, the brakes will not stop this acceleration while the vehicle is amping upward. The only way to stop the unintended acceleration is to turn off the cruise control. Highway driving from carrollton, texas to waco, texas on a clear day. My company has a policy that company vehicles should not exceed 70 mph. It is a fireable offence.

Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Corolla 6

When going downhill on cruise control my Corolla's rpm's go up to 5000 and instead of keeping stable speeds it increases the speeds. I feel like I can't control my vehicle when this happens. This is a huge safety issue. I'm not sure if something needs to be re-programmed but I've seen so many complaints on this issue. I wouldn't be surprised if a wreck has happened because of this. Toyota needs to be forced to fix this issue before someone seriously gets hurt or dies.

Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Corolla 7

The rpm of the car jumps upto 4000 when attempting to slow the car on down hills. Toyota dealerships are refusing to acknowledge the issue but there are cases many people got their car fixed or exchanged. This proves the issue when using cruise control. The ideal intent of using the cruise control is to save gas mileage and effort to drive the car for long distances. I have to travel long distances to work on daily basis. I feel very uncomfortable and unsafe driving the car on cruise. Toyota should acknowledge the problem to save the trust of the customers. This happens consistently. I am trying to contact Toyota for the issue. I hope to receive a positive response.

Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Corolla 8

As others have reported the cruise control on a down hill slope goes out of control. As I reach the top of the hill and start down the cruise control will accelerate to 4000 rpm and the speed will increase 10-15 mph over what the cruise control is set at. I must turn off the cruise control to regain control over the speed. Something is wrong with the programming of the cruise control. On down hill the cruise control should be reducing fuel to maintain speed not increase it. I am a police officer and this cruise control is a hazard.

Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Corolla 9

When using the radar controlled cruise control, the engine will sometimes rev to over 4000 rpm. A Toyota field engineer told me that this is engine braking, but this occurs when the car is on a level stretch of highway at the set speed and no other unusual circumstances. This exact same problem occurs with my wife's 2017 Corolla. . Read more...

Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Corolla 11

The cruise control system is designed so the engine and transmission down shifts when the system is engaged and going down hills. This puts much more wear and tear on both the engine and transmission. In addition to the down shift the rpm goes to over 4000 in an attempt to slow the car. This is completely unnecessary and drastically reduces gas mileage, which is exactly opposite of the original intent of the cruise control which was better gas mileage and peace of mind to not speed. The speed does go up 5 miles per hour when this happens. Bottom line is the engineers and their bosses who approved this system are all idiots and should be fired. You would assume you would get better gas mileage when going down hill when the engine would disengage because you would need less power and not more to maintain a certain speed. I was informed by the dealer the cruise control is designed to operate by gearing down, I told him no manufacture is that stupid. He then proved me wrong by showing me the manual proving Toyota is that stupid. I would have never purchased this car had I known this feature was designed in this way. Who knows what other systems in this Corolla are designed in such a stupid manner. I will certainly never buy another auto from this company.

Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Corolla 12

Adaptive cruise control causes the car to down-shift unnecessarily on a straight downhill grade and sometimes increases the speed by as much as 8-10 mph. I feel out of control, which is dangerous. A Toyota technician has confirmed the same behavior on another 2017 Corolla. On one occasion, on a freeway downhill where the speed could have easily been controlled by letting off the gas, the car downshifted to d3, revs went to about 4000, and the speed increased to 70mph - when it was set to about 62. On another occasion, on a relatively flat, straight freeway road, it again downshifted for no apparent reason, and the speed again increased over the set speed (of course the revs were higher again). In both of the above cases, there was no car or other obstacle in front of me that should cause the car to slow down. I've seen the adaptive cruise respond to a car too close so know how that feels.

Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Corolla 13

Tamara inflator. The cruise control in my 2018 Toyota Corolla has been messed up ever since I bought my car last year. I told the dealer ship about it they claimed they adjusted it but it still increases my speed going down hill and I've got a speeding ticket because of it. My daughter also called Toyota main head quarters but they said if I wanted it fix I would have to pay out of my pocket. . I will set my cruise control at 60 on the hwy if I go down a small. Hill my rpm and speed go up.

Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Corolla 14

The cruise control is just awful and has been since I bought the car brand new in December 2016. Just as several others have described, it cannot control the speed when going down hill. It raises the rpm's trying to slow the car down, but it isn't very effective. I've never had another car or another Toyota have such poor speed control. So much, that I don't even bother trying to use it anymore. A cop isn't going to listen to 'my cruise control wasn't working right' if I get pulled over. The brakes already feel like they are wearing out at 26k miles. My 13 camry had 30k and the brakes still felt brand new. Same with the 15 sentra I had. The suspension feels rougher and is starting to make noises already. This car shouldn't feel like it has 60k miles on it already.

Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Corolla 15

The vehicle does this 100% of the time. When on the adaptive cruise control on the interstate there are occasions where the cruise will go 14 mph above the set limit and the engine is at 4000 rpm or higher. I typically drive at 65 mph on the interstate; this is causing me to go to over 75 mph while the system is trying to recover back to 65mph. I also own a 2017 Toyota rav4 and drive the same roads; the cruise is 'rock steady'. It holds at a constant 65mph.

Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Corolla 16

Disappointed with Toyota on this, last one I will purchase if they are unable to provide a fix! while in motion on every occasion the cruise control is engaged and the vehicle is on a decline the cruise control does not maintain the set speed. This is the first time of 4 other Corolla's I have owned that responded like this. Depending on the severity of the decline the speed will increase from 5 to 15 mph and the engine revs to 4,000 rpms in an attempt to maintain speed. Adam's Toyota dealership has stated that this is a normal occurrence for all 2017 Corolla's cvt's and I maintain it's not and cruise is useless therefore I should be reimbursed. The cruise control in all other vehicles (prior Corolla's and other makes) I have owned has maintained a consistent speed no matter the road being traveled. Since I have owned this vehicle this issue has occurred every time I have engaged the cruise control. Others online have complaints on this issue as well. Toyota please provide fix.

Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Corolla 17

I just purchased a 2017 Corolla xse in Feb 2017. The first time it happened I had the cruise control on and was traveling to work at 05:15, and I came to an overpass and on the way down the normal overpass over a cross street, I heard the engine rev and I looked at the tach, and it was at 5000 rpm. I was startled. The same thing happened at the next overpass. This time it was 4000 rpm almost at the bottom of this rather short average downhill. This is still happening, but occasionally it does not. How could this possibly be correct. I can control the speed quite nicely with my foot on the accelerator without hardly any variation of my rpm's. This just doesn't make sense. I am not talking about a long downhill road that has a lane for trucks on the right, where they would have to downshift to maintain a safe speed, this is just overpasses on a freeway system. I asked my salesman, and he said that it was probably normal, and I said how could it be normal for this thing to rev at 5000 rpm on a houston freeway? I only have 5000 miles on this car. This will definitely affect the mileage. I am beside myself at this point.

Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla 18

Cruise control active, I made a speed change using the steering column lever when the engine went to 6,000 rpm in full acceleration. My speed was about 65 on a rural road prior to this event. I tapped the accelerator with no change, then the brake which cancelled the uncommanded acceleration.

While using cruise control on fairly level roadway, (rural road) at a speed of 45 mph, the rpm were about 1500, but increased suddenly to about 4500 rpm. After awhile the rpm would drop back down to normal for the speed situation. This occurs also at highway speed of 60 mph in our area. This occurrence has happened many times. Have returned to dealer twice now. Problem was observed by service manager and local Toyota rep who was in town for local auto show. Car was analyzed and data send to engineer in California who later said car is behaving normal. I found that hard to believe as both loaner cars (2017 Corolla) did not behave in this dangerous fashion. I feel this quick brush off by the engineer (tanaka) who is only observing data and not having to drive this car is wrong. I feel the computer should be adjusted for the cvt to solve this problem. Wife does not feel safe driving this vehicle. We have taken 3 videos to document this event.

Toyota Corolla With Manual Transmission

When the cruise control is engaged and the vehicle is on a decline the cruise control does not maintain the set speed. Depending on the severity of the decline the speed will increase from 5 to 15 mph. When using the accelerator pedal and maintaining the exact same pressure the vehicle only increases speed minimally (2 to 3 mph) on the decline. When in cruise control the speed increase is very drastic. The Toyota dealership has stated that this is a normal occurrence and that they have tested several same model and year Toyota vehicles and all have the same speeding tendencies so this is normal. The dealership stated that the fix is to engage the manual transmission mode to use the engine compression to slow the vehicle down. I have followed there advice and this does not rectify the problem. The cruise control in all vehicles I have owned is used to maintain a consistent speed no matter the terrain being traversed. This issue has occurred every time we have engaged the cruise control on the vehicle while driving on a highway that has a decline.

Cruise Control problem of the 2014 Toyota Corolla 21

When I was driving at night with headlights on, with cruise control on, the car accelerated by itself upto the speed of 85 mph even though I set cruise at 65 mph. I tried this multiple times and all the time it went up to 85 mph and stayed there even though I set it for lower speed. This seems to be happening while the headlights are on. I have drove with cruise on, in the daytime and it works fine. Since then, I have never drove this with cruise on at night.

The high beams on the headlights come on without the control being touched. This began when I first bought the car & still does. At first it would happen at any time of the day but now it happens only when it is dark or getting dark. This could impair the vision of the driver of an oncoming vehicle. It is most dangerous on narrow streets. There are other electrical problems that occur from time to time such as the cruise control, power mirrors, air conditioner, driving & dash lights not working. Also the dome light has remained on causing the battery to run down . These latter problems do not seem to pose the threat that the headlights do but they seem to be connected & they are a distraction that could cause problems. I have taken my car to the dealer many times but they never corrected the problem.

Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Toyota Corolla 23

While driving west on highway 50 at 65 mph at approximately 7 pm, I turned off the cruise control and the motor stopped at the same time. The car immediately began to slow down and I attempted to restart the motor, which was impossible with the car in gear (automatic transmission). The emergency lights were then turned on as the cars behind were honking their horns and other cars were passing right and left. We were in the second lane with the headlights, also on, of course. I tried starting the car in neutral and that didn't work. When we came to a full stop, I put the car in park and started the car. Everything went well after that.

Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla 24

On a trip to south carolina from new jersey interstate driving I experienced an issue with the cruise control. Issue is : when I come up on slower traffic and hit the brake the cruise control disengages as it should but when I let up off the brake pedal the vehicle accelerates rapidly on it's on without hitting the resume lever. Thinking quick I turned the cruise off. This happened 6 times on the round trip I finally quit using the cruise. The Toyota dealer said there is no recall or anything for this issue. I'm telling you this is unsafe as hell! I have an extensive mechanical background, I don't care what anybody says! I know what happened my wife and daughter saw it happen to.

Once a month or so when I am at highway speeds the car does not decelerate as normal when I take my foot off the gas petal. The car tend to stays at the speed it was at until I use the break. It is almost like the cruise control has been turned on without notice (it is never turned on during these cases). This sometimes includes the slight acceleration like some car get when they are going back on cruise control. Luckily I keep a good distance between me and the car ahead of me. I can see this issues causing accidents.
